Player image can often be a deciding factor in how you choose to play out a situation in poker. This can apply in the sense of your own image at the poker table, your opponents, or more likely both. Previous actions and poker player tendancies are important in formulating these images of people, and can provide you with the solution of how best to proceed in a tricky situation.

If you find yourself in a very powerful position against a poker player that has been raising lots of hands, perhaps you might feel playing your poker hand more slowly is advisable. It is important to remember this will often not be the best way to build a large pot. However, if there is a time when it is right to slow play, it is when you are quite certain you won’t be outdrawn, and you are faced with an aggressive poker player that loves to try and win every pot.
Sometimes you may find yourself faced with a poker player who has called down a few bets on the flop and turn in previous hands, and you may want to lead out to try and extract value. In each of these instances, and many others, trying to understand the type of poker player you are sat across from before you are involved in a big pot with them, is advisable.
Sometimes it will not be possible to do this however due to only having just sat at a poker table, but if you are given that opportunity to examine player actions and behaviour before being faced with a big decision, you should take it. Player images can be built over short term or long term poker play, but they are never 100% accurate, as any good player will try and play certain situations differently each time. Regardless of this, they can still provide you with a useful guide to your opponents intentions.
